Are Yeast Infections a Sign of Something More Serious?

Most women find yeast infections to be nothing more than an annoyance that they work quickly to get rid of. These infections are extremely uncomfortable, and can even lead to embarrassment. However, if you are finding that you are getting four or more yeast infections during the span of a year, you may have something more serious going on.

At one time, before yeast infection treatments were available over the counter, doctors were able to quickly identify that there was another problem going on. However, because women now have the option of treating their yeast infections without ever contacting the doctor, this is no longer the case. Instead, in this instance, we have to take care of our own health, and keep track of how often we have yeast infections.

It is also important to avoid factors that put us at a higher risk for yeast infections. If you do this, and you still have chronic yeast infections, you will know for sure that you need to get checked out by your doctor to see if a more serious problem exists.

Common causes of yeast infections, which should not raise any alarms, include stress, staying in wet clothing for long periods of time, wearing dark underwear that do not absorb well, not getting enough sleep, pregnancy, having poor eating habits, taking birth control pills, and taking antibiotics or steroids. Some women also get mild yeast infections either right before, during, or immediately after their menstrual periods, due to hormonal changes.

Of course, some of these problems are reason enough to visit the doctor to find a solution, such as hormonal changes or the use of birth control pills that cause yeast infections. However, there are two serious causes of chronic yeast infections that you should be aware of as well.

The two most serious problems that chronic yeast infections signal are diabetes and HIV/AIDS. If you are having chronic yeast infections, and you have made sure that you are not causing the yeast infections through other means, you definitely need to see your doctor. A weak immune system can also cause recurring yeast infections as well, and you may need nothing more than some vitamin supplements to resolve the problem.

Again, the occasional yeast infection is usually nothing to worry about. However, chronic yeast infections are something to worry about – until your doctor tells you that there is nothing to worry about.
