Types Of Baby Eczema
There are many different types of eczema. Most are fairly similar and some conditions appear to overlap too.
The most common type of eczema is atopic eczema. 1 in 10 children are affected and many will grow out of it.
Nobody knows the exact cause but it is likely that your baby’s eczema is a reaction to some kind of allergen such as house dust, pet hair or something in the diet.
The other type of baby eczema is called seborrhoeic eczema. It is different to atopic eczema because it tends to present with a lot of skin flaking (like dandruff). This starts at the scalp and face and can spread elsewhere on the body. In babies, it is often referred to as “cradle cap” because a yellowing of the affected skin can be present on the scalp.
Treatment Of Baby Eczema
First, you should seek to moisturise the affected areas. All types of eczema thrive in dry conditions. Use a baby moisturiser after washing. If you live in a very dry environment then consider investing in a home humidifier unit. These are simply to use – you simply fill a compartment full of water and then turn on the machine.
Second, you should try to work out what might be causing your baby’s eczema. The only way to do this with any certainty is to eliminate possible factors one by one or to eliminate them all and then gradually reintroduce them.
The easiest place to start is with any obvious allergens. Is there a lot of dust in your house? Do you own pets? Next are the less obvious potential triggers. A common one is biological laundry detergent. Look for a “non-bio” alternative instead. Diet is also a potential source of triggers. Almost anything can trigger eczema including dairy, fish, eggs, wheat and even some types of fruit.
If the eczema is severe and needs more urgent and immediate treatment then your doctor may be able to prescribe a mild corticosteroid such as hydrocortisone cream, to be applied to the affected areas. This will act quickly to reduce any inflammation.
