What is nail fungus?
Nail fungus is an infection where microorganisms / parasites invade the skin under the nail. The fungal infection involves all layers of the nail including the nail bed. In severe untreated cases, it can progress to the nail root, this is the area under the cuticle where the nail grows from. The medical terminology for nail fungus is Onychomycosis (On-eh-ko-my-ko-sis). The fungus present in these infections are dermatophytes, yeasts and sometimes, molds.

Why is it tough to cure nail fungus?
Finger nail fungus is not easily cured. It is a fungal infection that lives underneath the nail. So, unfortunately it is well protected, tough to get at, and the nail bed remains moist because of the nail covering. But with some unrelenting attention and a mix of treatments, you should be able to cure your finger nail fungus. Here’s how:
Keep the nail dry. The toughest thing about getting rid of the fungal infection is keeping the nail away from water. It will only add to the nail’s moisture and keep the nail bed wet, where fungi just love to grow. This means when you take a shower, the hand or finger must remain outside of the stall. (Maybe even in a loose plastic bag or rubber glove.) But make sure air can still circulate so that the hand doesn’t sweat, thus defeating the whole purpose of leaving the hand outside the shower in the first place. Also, when washing dishes, doing the laundry or any other activity containing water, the hand must be protected in the same way, but wear a rubber glove or loose fitting plastic bag.

Remove nail polish. To cure nail fungus, you must keep the nail exposed to light. Fungi love to grow in dark areas. So once you discover nail fungus, remove all nail polish immediately until you cure the nail.

The most common toenail fungus is known as onychomycosis, and is easily identified. When a person becomes infected, the area under the nail becomes filled with a yellow or brown substance. Although toenails are the most commonly affected areas, it is important to note that fingernails can become infected too.

Toenail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a relatively common condition that disfigures and sometimes destroys the nail. Onychomycosis can be caused by several different types of fungi (microscopic organisms related to mold and mildew). These fungi thrive in the dark, moist and stuffy environment inside shoes. As they grow, they feed on keratin, the tough protein that makes up the hard surface of the toenails.

Fungal infections of the nails have always been tough to treat, with available medications that were either too weak or too toxic. A new generation of treatments may finally turn the tide.
