If You Want Your Skin To Last, You’d Better Cut Down On Your Synthetics

Research from the University of Louisiana has shown that the more natural the skin care products you use, the better you will retain your looks. The study was a collaborative effort of the sociology department and dermatology research group, which saw 4500 individuals take part over a 5 year period.

The study aimed to determine which type of skin care products made people look more beautiful not only in the short term (1-10 weeks) but also the long term (1-5 years). A whole host of products were tested, including high street brands, those from small organic companies, health spa products, high end luxury products and even supermarket own-brands.Without being told what the product was, a group of people tested each one for 5 years. Pictures were taken of them at weekly intervals and assessed by a completely individual group of people.

There were some interesting findings from the study. Firstly that the more expensive and exclusive products had more of an impact of perceived beauty over a short term period, i.e. after the participant had used the products on their skin for between 1 and 10 weeks.Secondly, those participants who had been given skin care products to use that had the lowest levels of synthetic ingredients, actually came out top on the improved attractiveness rating, when judged over the long term, i.e. between 1 and 5 years.

The head researcher of the study has said that the the results are what he expected, as the man-made ingredients, that gave the impression of improvement in the first place, are not what the skin is designed to deal with and so thus there were always going to be consequences somewhere down the line

Their advice is to always check the labels when you buy skin care products and make sure you know that the products used are high quality and natural when you go for any spa treatment .
