Make Homemade Soap: Preparations And Precautions
When you set up to make homemade soap the most important thing to remember is that it is super simple. It just needs good preparation. Homemade soap uses lye, otherwise known as caustic soda, and you do need to take care with it so that it doesn’t spatter and burn you. Some people get really bothered by this, thought I don’t know why – after all most cooks are happy to cook food that becomes very hot. When was the last time you took bread or a roast out of the oven, or made some chocolate fudge or jam? All of these need you to take appropriate precautions to avoid getting burned.
There is no getting over it. Without lye the soap can’t be made. It just doesn’t happen. You just need to be very careful how you deal with the lye. Firstly you make sure the workplace floor is clear so you won’t slip or trip over anything. Secondly clear all the work spaces so that you have a clear space to work that is big enough for the task. Thirdly keep all children and animals out of the way. You don’t want to get distracted at crucial times nor do you want them to get under your feet as you make homemade soap. These are the same precautions you would take for any baking or cooking where hot temperatures are involved.
Lye or caustic soda comes in small crystals and as long as they are completely dry they are harmless. However the slightest moisture, including moisture on your hands will start the burning process, so don’t touch them. If you do get some on your hands or clothes and you are aware of burning then use lots and lots of water to wash it away.
When you make homemade soap remember that it is all in the preparation. Keep your workplace clear of unnecessary clutter and then just enjoy the process.
