Making Sure We Have What We Need And Then Getting What We Want
Having the right amount of necessities in our lives means deciding what things we have that are a must-have set of objects and what things we have that are a nice-to-have set of objects. This can be one way to go about simplifying life just a bit, which is something that most people are adamant about trying to do these days, anyway.
For example, consider women (and increasingly, men) who spend a great deal of money on removal of hair from certain parts of their bodies. The initial cost for something like laser hair removal might be a bit more than for older-style waxing, but people in the know and who consider such removal a ‘must-have’ item in their lives understand that the long term cost savings with laser treatments can be quite significant.
There are probably dozens of such ‘must-have’ objects that are items particular to somebody’s own life. And while you may have certain must haves that somebody else wouldn’t consider to be a must-have, it’s just as certain that they have more than a few that you wouldn’t consider. That is what partially makes us so interesting as a species; our self-awareness and our particular wants or needs (those pesky ‘must haves’).
A good example of something that is rapidly becoming a must-have are those ebook readers that we see on television on a near 24/7 basis. For sure, they’re going to replace traditional newspapers and other media and probably sooner than many of us are comfortable with. And certainly, there are already many people who consider those readers to be a must-have item, which should come as no surprise.
For parents, especially those parents who have newborns or infants several months old or so, something like a wireless baby monitor would be a great example of a must-have that probably would be something that would be a ‘doesn’t need’ on the part of some 21-year-old male college senior living in a dormitory. To him, such a device wouldn’t come close to entering his worldview though it would be very important in the new parents’ world.
The point to all this is that each and every one of us has a certain set of must-haves in our lives that wouldn’t even come close to being a must-have in somebody else’s life. That is what helps to make us unique as humans and also helps to define us in terms of how we manage our existence. We all have things that we need, though those same things — to others — might be things that are only wanted.
That’s perhaps one of the most important skills to develop when it comes to the collection of stuff; being able to tell what’s needed from what’s wanted. If we can take a few minutes to examine what’s important in our life we’ll soon be able to look at things with the right kind of attitude and figure out for ourselves what we must have versus what we’d like to have.
